I shared the song, The God I Love, in 2012 when I was just getting my blog started. I was looking at the words to the song this morning and was reading the first verse of the song, which say,
Just an ordinary girl
It was not what she had planned
It was hard to understand
When suddenly her life was changed
Dreams would have to wait
Alone and so afraid
But can you hear the words of Mary saying,
“Let it be so”
Lord, I would do anything because I know
Mary was just an ordinary girl, living an ordinary life—as we see in Luke 1:27-38—when the angel, Gabriel came to tell Mary that she would conceive a son, and to call His name Jesus.
Luke 1:31-33 says,
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Mary was afraid! The angel told her she has found favour with God. (Luke 1:30) Mary, like any normal person approached by an Angel had a question. Her question was how.
Luke 1:34 says, Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
God always has answers to our questions. So Gabriel tells her in Luke 1:35-37
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
For with God nothing shall be impossible
God had it all planned out. Mary’s cousin would be the mother of John the Baptist, who would tell people that there was a Savior coming. God is not a procrastinator—no, He is very organized in how He wants everything to go. This task God gave Mary wasn’t impossible, although it may have looked hard to Mary at the time. She knew God would help her through it.
I love how Mary responds in Luke 1:38, And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Mary’s basically saying, “Lord I am willing, though I may not understand everything or why you have chosen me. I am willing.”
As I continued to read verse 2 of this song, I thought about my life and how God allowed Dystonia into my life. I was thinking the other day about how God hand-picked me to be among the 250,000 people in the United States to have a form of Dystonia. God can take us through circumstances that we know we can’t face alone. That’s why He’s always there to help and to guide us along the way.
I don’t know what you’re facing this Christmas season or in the upcoming year. May I encourage you to trust God, because He has everything in control. It maybe hard at times, but remember, “With God nothing shall be impossible!”
Here are the words to the song, The God I Love
The God I Love
Verse 1
Just an ordinary girl
It was not what she had planned
It was hard to understand
When suddenly her life was changed
Dreams would have to wait
Alone and so afraid
But can you hear the words of Mary saying,
“Let it be so”
Lord, I would do anything because I know
Chorus
The God I love forever will be faithful
The God I love forever will never let me go
The God I love forever stay beside
Guide me home
For you alone are the God I love
Verse 2
Just an ordinary day,
it was not what I had planned,
it was hard to understand.
When suddenly my life had changed,
it seemed so unfair,
but God was always there.
And through it all I come to see He ‘s faithful let it be so.
Lord I would do anything because I know
Verse 3
Just an ordinary song,
I seem to let you know our God is in control,
When suddenly your life has changed,
and it’s not what you had planned,
try to understand that God can work a miracle in your life,
Let it be so,
Say I will do anything because, I know.
Thank you for sharing, Abigail! This was very encouraging to me today!
