I’m positive this has happened to you before, when you wake up in the morning with a song in your head that you haven’t heard in ages.
I’m always waking up in the mornings with some song in my head. But when I woke up the other day I had this lyric in my head that I hadn’t heard since I was 4 or 5. The lyric was from a Christian cartoon movie called Adventures with Psalty. The lyric that kept repeating in my mind was, “Jesus put the song in my heart, a joyful melody.”
I honestly don’t remember much about the time after I got sick. My parents have told me I was a very confused and frustrated little girl. While I may not remember every detail of my childhood, I can look back at it with mixed emotions and stillsmile while saying, “I had a wonderful childhood!” It was different living with a disability. But having dystonia has strengthened and stretched my relationship with the Lord.
As I was looking for the song on YouTube, it brought several other songs up in my memory bank that I treasure but had totally forgotten about—songs like Make Me A Servant, One Step At A Time, and Did You Ever Talk To God Above. “Did You Ever Talk To God Above?” takes me back to 9-year-old Abbey, singing this song in my head at night when I couldn’t go to sleep because I was gritting my teeth. I loved learning this song as a kid because it comforted me. I loved it so much I picked it out on the piano. [I did that with several songs when I was a kid.]
Isn’t crazy how music can take us back to another lifetime yet the words are even sweeter to you now? For instance, the song I mentioned at the beginning of this post, “Jesus Put A Song In My Heart,” is now embedded in my brain with thousands of other songs. The words to that song became a reality I’m now living.
Music connects us. Music excites us. Music moves us. Music reminds us of God’s amazing attributes. I’m so thankful for the precious music memories I have.
“Precious memories how they linger. How they ever touch my soul…”
What song are you singing today?
What were some of your favorite childhood songs growing up?

Colossians 3:16 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
OH ABBEY:
Ya made my eyes leak—-again. The “did you ever—“ song takes me back to when yer Mom & Aunt Suz sang it at church & youth camp. That you sang it too is awesome. I just listened to all of it; great song. I am SO grateful for wonderful, meaningful, beautiful music. God uses it in my life, for sure. Cannot imagine life without it.
I sing in bed before I go to sleep. Currently I am singing “His Love Will Shelter Me” by Tim Lovelace. I’ll change to something else soon. I also memorize words to songs I love that way.
I love ya Abigail; prayed for you this morning.
