Many of us have waited seemingly endlessly in a waiting room at a doctor’s office, trying not to catch anything else while we patently wait our turn. In the same sense, God has a waiting room. We have all been there at some point in our lives, too, whether it’s waiting to find a job, a life mate, a baby, or waiting on ________ (you fill in the blank).
Waiting is a part of life; but, as we wait, life keeps going along. I find this statement to be so true in my life. When I’m waiting on the Lord to direct me in my life, I get unfocused and start worrying that nothing in my life will work out. I get tired of not knowing what’s going to happen next in my life. Sounds like Veruca Salt in the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, saying, “I want to know now!”
Yes, I struggle with waiting on the Lord and trusting in His plan for my life. As I began studying the word “wait” I found that wait occurs 106 times in 101 verses in the King James Bible. There are so many examples of characters in the Bible who had to wait on the Lord in their lives—Abraham and Sarah, Joseph, the Israelites, David, Ruth, Easter, and the list goes on.
Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”
Isaiah 40:31 says, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Waiting on the Lord and His perfect timing in life can get tiring and even difficult at times. But if we don’t wait but try to do something our own way, we might miss an important lesson He’s trying to teach us. We need the Lord’s strength in our lives; without it, we would be doing everything in our strength. I don’t know about you, but if I had to rely on my own strength I know I wouldn’t be where I am today. I must cling to the Lord daily and sometimes hourly, humbly asking for His strength that I desperately need.
The song “Waiting in the Water” has been a blessing to me for many years. The second verse and chorus express how I feel, sometimes, getting through life. Although the future is uncertain, the song says, we have to live each day by faith. These words are at the end and they’re a challenge to me.
“I know He knows where I am
And somehow this is all in His plan.
So until my healing comes
I’ll keep pressing on.”
Will I keep pressing on—waiting in the fountain of God’s Word? That’s my desire, to thirst after the truths of the Bible as the Lord continues to grow my faith during the season of waiting.
Since I don’t know what season of life you’re going through, may I encourage you to keep pressing on. You never know what great things the Lord has in store for you. Don’t stop. Press on!
Verse 1
A helpless man blind from birth
The only one who saw his worth
Didn’t pass him by, He heard his cry
He rubbed his eyes with a handful of clay
Then He said, “Go wash in the pool today”
And the blind man knew that’s what he had to do
You know along the way
He couldn’t help but trip and fall
Each time he got back up
I wonder if he thought
Chorus
Every step I take is a step in faith
When I can’t see what’s in front of me
I’ll walk on and just believe
He hears my prayer
And when I get there
The miracle promised by my father
Is waiting in the water
Verse 2
I’ve walked in darkness, I won’t lie
Just like that blind man sometimes
I’ve felt all alone, like all hope was gone
I know that His word is true
And no matter what I’m going through
He promised me that He would never leave
I know along the way
I may stumble and I may fall
But I’ll make it to the water
Even if I have to crawl
Chorus
Every step I take is a step of faith
When I can’t see what’s in front of me
I’ll walk on and just believe
He hears my prayer
And when I get there
The miracle promised by my father
Is waiting in the water
I know He knows where I am
And somehow this is all in His plan
So until my healing comes
I’ll keep pressing on
Every step I take is a step of faith
When I can’t see what’s in front of me
I’ll walk on and just believe
He hears my prayer
And when I get there
The miracle promised by my father
Is waiting in the water

That is just what I needed to read this week, Abby! Thank you so much for sharing your heart and seeking to be a blessing through this season of waiting and trusting. I’m coming to realize more and more that what we go through may not only be for us personally, but so that we can be an encouragement to others who are either going through the same season or following behind. Our experiences in life and the lessons we learn is not just our story, but His to use as He sees fit. Thank you again!
