Choosing to Love God, Even When I Still Have Unanswered Questions

It’s not what I prayed for.

It’s not what I wanted.

It’s not something I understand.

My circumstances seem so confusing,

I’m placing it in Your hands.”

Tears immediately flowed down my face when I heard these words to “Your Ways Are Higher Than Mine,” for the first time Monday morning from the Collingsworth Family’s newest CD. I felt like these three simple statements were old acquaintances this year more than ever.  I have been walking through the “what if” and “why me” valleys for a while now, trying once again to figure out why God allowed dystonia into my life. Truthfully, I’m getting worn out with living with dystonia. I have pictured being a physically able person for years. I have asked countless questions like, “Where would I be today if I didn’t have dystonia?” Which leads to “I could’ve” or “I would’ve” statements that can take me down a swirl of emotions.

I’ll always struggle and have unanswered questions on this earth like Job. Job never got the answers He desired until he went to be with the Lord. I love this quote by Philip Yancey about Job,

“God wants us to choose to love him freely, even when that choice involves pain, because we are committed to him, not to our own good feelings and rewards. He wants us to cleave to him, as Job did, even when we have every reason to deny him hotly. That, I believe, is the central message of Job. Satan had taunted God with the accusation that humans are not truly free. Was Job being faithful simply because God had allowed him a prosperous life? Job’s fiery trials proved the answer beyond doubt. Job clung to God’s justice when he was the best example in history of God’s apparent injustice. He did not seek the Giver because of his gifts; when all gifts were removed he still sought the Giver.”

I must continually cling to the promises of God and choose to love Him daily because He first loved me. His ways will always be higher than mine and I may not always comprehend everything He’s doing. But I’m going to trust His work, His will and His time in my life.

I don’t know what trying circumstance you are facing at this moment. May I comfort you? It’s OK to ask God questions when you are struggling with your life. Job and Psalms are filled with countless questions. I love how transparent Job and David are with God. It shows us we can also be real with the Lord. He wants us to tell Him what we’re going through and comfort us.

Are you daily choosing to cling to His promises and love Him even though He allowed a unjust circumstance in your life? I understand it will be hard but Jesus will understand it completely.

Your Ways Are Higher Than Mine

Verse 1

It’s not what I prayed for.

It’s not what I wanted.

It’s not something I understand.

My circumstances seem so confusing,

I’m placing it in Your hands.

Chorus

Your ways are higher than mine.

I want mountains to move,

You want me to climb.

So I’m going to trust Your work, Your will and Your time

Your ways are higher than mine.

Verse 2

One day I’m sure I will look back and marvel

At how you knew best all along.

You see from Heaven,

You know it’s the hard times

that make my faith steady and stronger.

Chorus

Your ways are higher than mine.

I want mountains to move,

You want me to climb.

So I’m going to trust Your work, Your will and Your time

Your ways are higher than mine.

Bridge

When I start to doubt,

Help me believe, somewhere.

So far above me.

Your ways are higher than mine.

I want mountains to move,

You want me to climb.

So I’m going to trust Your work, Your will and Your time

Your ways are so much higher than mine.

Your ways are higher than mine.

Thanks for sharing this topic. It can be tough to delve into! As you’ve beautifully pointed out, he’s so good to change our perspective and grow our need for him versus the need for answered prayer. It is truly miraculous!
